Thoughts of Recovery No 17 The Spiritual Malady Step 1
Finally, someone explained to me that those things are not the insanity that the Big Book talks about; nor are those things why the alcoholic’s life becomes unmanageable. Once you’ve found something that you can believe in, it’s important to remember that your Higher Power is there for you when you need it. When things get tough, take a moment to pray, meditate, or just sit quietly and think about your Higher Power and what it means to you. Allow yourself to feel the strength and support that comes from knowing that there is something bigger than yourself out there rooting for your success. One of the most important things in AA is finding a sponsor – someone who has been through the program and can help guide you through it.

The trauma and non-trauma groups did not significantly differ in age, gender, or racial/ethnic identification. The trauma group scored higher than the non-trauma group on PTSD symptoms at both time points and on spiritual struggle at Time 2. There was a trend toward a significant difference between the groups for the subscales of spiritual struggle.
To beat their addiction, people must face the reality that there is indeed a power larger than themselves.
Spiritual maladies can manifest in numerous ways and affect various aspects of our lives, including mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

The analyses control for pre-event PTSD symptoms to allow for examination of change in PTSD symptoms in response to the index event. To conclude, it’s not my body — my allergic reaction to alcohol — that’s going to take me back to drinking. It’s really not my mind — the mental obsession — that is the underlying root of what will take me back to drinking.
The Role of Spirituality in Addiction Recovery

The Connection Between Physical Health and Spiritual Maladies
Parallels between spiritual struggle and established (secular) negative cognitive responses to potentially traumatic events clearly exist, as does a small body of literature associating spiritual struggle with greater PTSD symptoms. However, research elucidating the character and directionality of the relationship between struggle and PTSD symptoms is needed. Prior studies have not assessed subscales of spiritual struggle separately to isolate possible differences in relationships with PTSD symptoms, and subtle differences exist among expressions of spiritual struggle, which may result in unique relationships with PTSD symptoms.
The Spiritual Malady: A Hole in the Soul
We must live our lives selflessly and show our gratitude to a higher power for the lives that we live and the opportunity to have a second chance at life. This is the type of spiritually maladapted behavior that we typically exhibit in active alcoholism. When spiritual malady definition not treating the spiritual aspect of the disease those behaviors are the types of things that will start to make life unmanageable once again. Anxiousness, depression, and boredom are a few other factors that contribute to being spiritually maladapted.
Types of Spiritual Healing (& What to Be Careful Of)
2Three participants did not report the number of months since the most stressful or distressing event occurred. This study did not control for other possible contributors to PTSD symptoms, including type of trauma experienced and the total number of traumas experienced in the Time 1 to Time 2 interim, because there was insufficient variability to do so. Additionally, the most common trauma in the present sample was sudden, unexpected bereavement, which may be better characterized by grief responses not fully captured by the sole outcome measure of PTSD symptoms (Gray et al., 2004). Now, while there are plenty of people who recover without a spiritual practice, many people argue that spirituality must be the cornerstone of our recovery. This is true of many people who recover and heal in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

We have to be aware of this phenomenon in everything we do and we have to be willing to look directly at this reality to be aware and correct course. When we are threatened, we also have two defensive phenotypes. One is a mobilization response to threat where we can prejudge, react, attack, argue, criticize, blame, and experience interpersonal disconnections.
